More Than a Purchase: The Power of Supporting Small Business

One of my favourite things about owning a small business isn't the business itself. It's the people.

The conversations with other business owners who understand the highs, the lows, the uncertainty and the excitement. The ones who celebrate your wins because they know just how much work went into them. The ones who recommend you to their customers simply because they believe in what you do.

There's something incredibly special about that.

When you walk into a small business, you're rarely just buying a product or booking a service.

You're supporting someone's dream.

You're backing someone who has probably spent countless evenings working after everyone else has gone to bed, wondering if they've made the right decision. Small businesses don't have huge marketing budgets or teams of people working behind the scenes. It's hard work. But it's also incredibly rewarding.

One of the things I've loved most over the years has been connecting with other local businesses. Whether it's collaborating on a giveaway, sharing each other's work, or simply recommending someone whose service I genuinely trust, it reminds me that we're stronger together.

Community isn't about competition. There's room for all of us.

When we choose to support another local business, we're not taking anything away from ourselves. In fact, we often gain so much more. We build relationships, create opportunities and strengthen the communities we all call home.

I've been incredibly fortunate to receive support from other small business owners, and I never take that for granted. Every referral, every recommendation and every kind word has helped The Soul Library grow.

It reminds me that success doesn't have to be a solo journey.

As a reflexologist, I often talk about balance. Our communities need balance too. A thriving community isn't built by one business standing alone. It's built by people choosing to support one another, cheering each other on and recognising that every small act of encouragement creates a ripple effect.

So the next time you're deciding where to buy your coffee, your shoes, your flowers, your gift or where to book your next treatment, remember that your choice matters. To someone, it could mean far more than a sale. It could be the encouragement they needed to keep going.

Would you like to be part of the community?

One of my favourite parts of a session are the conversations that happen during a treatment. We don't just talk about health, we talk about life.

Sometimes it's finding a great real estate agent or broker. Other times it's an accountant, a landscaper, a lawyer, a florist, or another wellbeing practitioner who offers something different to what I do.

Over time, I've realised that I love connecting good people with good people.

So I've started collecting business cards from professionals that I genuinely know, trust and am happy to recommend. It's my own little community noticeboard, filled with people whose work I believe in.

So if I don’t have your card already, next time you’re in please bring some cards with you.
