What to Expect in Your First Reflexology Session

A gentle guide for those just beginning their journey into reflexology.

If you’re thinking about booking your first reflexology session — welcome! Whether you’re curious about the benefits, seeking support for a health concern, or just craving some calm, you’re in the right place.

Trying something new can bring up questions (and even a little nervousness), so this guide will walk you through exactly what to expect — from the moment you arrive, to how you might feel afterward.

What Is Reflexology, Exactly?

Reflexology is a holistic therapy based on the idea that your feet (and hands and ears) contain reflex points that correspond to every part of your body — organs, glands, muscles, and more.

By applying gentle pressure to specific areas on the feet, reflexology helps to:

  • Release tension

  • Improve circulation

  • Support the body’s natural healing processes

  • Restore physical and emotional balance

It’s deeply relaxing, non-invasive, and suitable for almost everyone.

When You Arrive: A Warm Welcome

Your first session begins with a short consultation. I’ll ask about your health history, lifestyle, and any areas you’d like to focus on — whether it’s physical discomfort, stress, sleep issues, or emotional wellbeing.

Then you’ll lie back in a reclining chair. You’ll remain fully clothed, with just your socks removed and clothing rolled up to your knees (it’s a good idea to wear loose clothing). A blanket may be offered for warmth and comfort, and the lights will be dimmed to help you relax.

During the Session: What It Feels Like

Using specific thumb and finger techniques, I’ll apply gentle pressure to various reflex points on your feet. Some areas may feel sensitive — this is completely normal and can indicate areas of tension or imbalance in the body.

You might feel:

  • Warmth or tingling

  • Waves of relaxation

  • Emotional release

  • A sense of “energy shifting” or letting go

Many people drift into a dreamy, meditative state or even fall asleep — which is totally fine (and quite common!).

After the Session: What to Expect

Most clients leave feeling calm, clear, and deeply relaxed. Some may notice physical changes such as:

  • Improved digestion

  • Better sleep that night

  • A release of emotional tension

  • A need to rest or drink more water

Occasionally, your body may go through a gentle detox response — feeling a little tired or emotional as things rebalance. This usually passes quickly and is a sign that your body is responding and shifting.

How Often Should You Come?

This depends on your individual goals. Some people come weekly for a time (especially for stress, pain, or specific health conditions), then shift to fortnightly or monthly sessions for maintenance and wellbeing.

We’ll chat after your session about what feels right for you.
